Marty and I had known each other since our schooldays but we opted for careers in uniform when we were seventeen. I joined the army and Marty went into the navy. We kept in touch and I was surprised to learn that he left the service after three years. I left the army one year later.
We’d talked about girls a lot in our letters and I suggested to celebrate my discharge from the army we should hire a big camper van and go touring Scotland.
It was obvious we were going to see a lot of each other, but I couldn’t have imagined how much.
We met girls on our trip into remote areas of the Scottish Highlands, and a couple of the girls were keen to explore too.
If the aim of our trip was discovery, it was achieved.
